About ALMA

AFRICAN LEADERS MALARIA ALLIANCE

ALMA is an alliance of African Heads of State working to end malaria-related deaths. This body was founded by African Heads of State to utilize their individual and collective power across country and regional borders to:

Keep malaria high on the political and policy agenda at global, national and local levels;
Provide a forum for high-level, collective advocacy to ensure an efficient global procurement system with an emphasis on funding, manufacturing and distribution;
Provide a forum to share best practices and to review progress and address challenges in meeting the malaria targets.

In September 2009, African Heads of State will launch ALMA at the 64th UNGA. The ALMA website www.alma2015.org will launch on September 23, 2009. There will be several media placements in the Western press along with robust coverage in the African press. Each Head of State will sign on to the ALMA statement affirming and committing to the 2010 and 2015 targets. ALMA members will present planned activities for the upcoming 16 months.

In January 2010, Friends of ALMA will launch at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland highlighting new commitments and progress toward the 2010 and 2015 targets. The Friends of ALMA inaugural chair will be named. At the same time, ALMA will host its first session alongside the African Union in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia reporting on challenges and progress to date. Plans include widespread coverage in the Western and African press. Both events start the countdown to United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon's call for universal coverage of malaria interventions by December 31, 2010.
