Tanzania
Introduction
Malaria is endemic in all parts of Tanzania, with seasonal peaks. The annual reported number of malaria cases in 2010 was 8,752,350 with 15,867 deaths.
Progress
Tanzania has made significant progress in scaling-up malaria control interventions. The country has made key policy changes including banning oral artemisinin-based monotherapies and removing tariffs on all key anti-malarial commodities. The universal LLIN coverage campaign was completed in the last quarter of 2011. Sufficient resources have been secured to maintain universal coverage of LLINs, ACTs and RDTs in 2012. Tanzania has also made good progress on key MNCH interventions including PMTCT and DPT3.
Impact
The annual reported number of malaria cases in 2010 was 8,752,350 with15, 867 deaths. In Zanzibar, malaria morbidity and mortality has been substantially reduced, with a decrease of 75% in the numbers of malaria cases, inpatient malaria cases and deaths in 2009 compared to the average for 2000–2004.
Key Challenges
- The country requires resources to sustain universal coverage of LLINs for 2013 and beyond.
- Delays in AMFm implementation and the uncertainty of the future of the AMFm programme.
