Introduction

Malaria transmission in South Sudan is generally perennial, with moderate to high intensity. The annual reported number of malaria cases in 2010 was 1,465,496 with 1,023 deaths.

Progress

South Sudan has made some progress in scaling-up malaria control interventions and has, in particular, been successful in attracting resources through the Global Fund including through Round 10, which will allow for accelerated scale-up. Progress has been made in scaling-up LLINs, and in rolling out Community Case Management of malaria and pneumonia to increase coverage of case management.

Impact

The reported number of malaria cases in 2010 was 1,465,496, with 116,736 malaria admissions and 1,023 malaria deaths.

Key Challenges

  • Weak procurement and supply chain system.
  • Delayed disbursement delaying implementation.
  • Lack of resources for IRS.
  • Weak malaria surveillance, data collection and analysis.
  • Lack of adequate human resources capacity, staffing and technical capacity at all levels.

"By establishing ALMA, we are now creating a critical forum and mechanism for advocacy, action, and follow-up on the implementation of these noble malaria goals."

~ President Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete, United Republic of Tanzania
