Introduction

The entire population of Sierra Leone is at high risk of malaria. The annual reported number of malaria cases in 2010 was 934,028 with 8,188 deaths.

Progress

Sierra Leone has banned oral artemisinin-based monotherapies and has introduced Community Case Management for both malaria and pneumonia. Sierra Leone has mobilized resources to procure the majority of its malaria commodity requirements though some gaps still exist. The country has made significant progress in PMTCT coverage.

Impact

The annual reported number of malaria cases in 2010 was 934,028 with 8,188 deaths.

Key Challenges

  • Sierra Leone levies tariffs on essential malaria commodities, such as LLINs, ACTs, insecticides, IRS pumps and RDTs.
  • Inefficient procurement and supply chain management contribute to delays in commodity procurements such as LLINs.
  • There is inadequate funding to adequately, strengthen M&E, operational research and program administration.

"By establishing ALMA, we are now creating a critical forum and mechanism for advocacy, action, and follow-up on the implementation of these noble malaria goals."
