Introduction

Malaria is endemic throughout Senegal, with seasonal transmission occurring from June to November. The annual reported number of malaria cases in 2009 was 222,232 with 574 deaths.

Progress

Senegal has made great progress in malaria control in recent years. Malaria cases and deaths have declined. This success is premised by the introduction and wide scale use of RDTs, as well as the ban on oral artemisinin-based monotherapies, adequate financing for malaria commodities, and the introduction of Community Case Management for both malaria and pneumonia. Senegal has also removed tariffs on ACTs, RDTs and LLINs.

Impact

Senegal has reported a decline in malaria cases and deaths over the past three years. Inpatient malaria cases and deaths declined markedly between 2007 and 2008 and again in 2009. The reported number of deaths declined from 1,935 in 2007 to 574 in 2009 and during the same period the number of inpatient malaria cases declined from 8,815 to 2,828. Senegal has achieved a 25% reduction in malaria burden since 2000.

Key Challenges

  • Sustaining the impressive progress made in control and reduction of malaria burden.
  • Tariffs still exist on insecticides and IRS pumps.

"By establishing ALMA, we are now creating a critical forum and mechanism for advocacy, action, and follow-up on the implementation of these noble malaria goals."
