Introduction

The entire population of the Republic of the Congo is at high risk of malaria and transmission is intense all year round. The annual reported number of malaria cases in 2009 was 92,855 with 116 deaths.

Progress

Congo introduced Community Case Management of malaria to bring services closer to the population. The country has declared its intention to ban oral artemisinin based-monotherapies but has not taken practical steps at country level to implement it. Congo has distributed enough nets to achieve universal coverage. The country has made good progress in other MNCH interventions, particularly on skilled birth attendants and DPT3.

Impact

The annual reported number of malaria cases in 2009 was 92,855 with 116 deaths.

Key Challenges

  • There is inadequate supervision for LLIN distribution operations, such as training for household enumeration and distribution.
  • The PNLP’s lack of control over private sector ACTs supplies and management leads to inability to ensure population-wide availability of ACTs.

"By establishing ALMA, we are now creating a critical forum and mechanism for advocacy, action, and follow-up on the implementation of these noble malaria goals."

~ President Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete, United Republic of Tanzania
