Mauritania
Introduction
In Mauritania, almost 15% of the population is at high risk and 75% is at low risk of malaria. The annual reported number of malaria cases in 2010 was 238,565 with 211 deaths.
Progress
Mauritania has banned the import and sale of oral artemisinin-based monotherapies and removed tariffs on ACTs and RDTs. The country has introduced a policy on Community Case Management for malaria but has not yet introduced the policy on Community Case Management of pneumonia. The country has sufficient resources available for ACTs in 2012.
Impact
The annual reported number of malaria cases in 2010 was 238,565 and 211 deaths. The country reported an average of 247,000 suspected malaria cases per year during 2000–2005 and 238,565 cases in 2010. The number of reported malaria cases, malaria admissions and malaria deaths has been increasing over the last three years.
Key Challenges
- Mauritania is facing serious resource constraints as there is no current Global Fund grant.
