Mali
Introduction
The entire population of Mali is at risk of malaria and over 80% of the population lives in high-transmission areas. Transmission is more intense in the south, with seasonal peaks between May and November. The annual reported number of malaria cases in 2010 was 1,018,846 with 3,006 deaths.
Progress
Mali has banned oral artemisinin-based monotherapies and waived tariffs on LLINs, ACTs and RDTs. The country has introduced a policy on Community Case Management of pneumonia. However, the country has yet to introduce a policy on Community Case Management of malaria. Mali has secured resources to procure enough ACTs in 2012.
Impact
The annual reported number of malaria cases in 2010 was 1,018,846 with 3,006 deaths. 532,490 malaria admissions were reported in 2010. There has been an increase in reported malaria cases and deaths in Mali over the last three years.
Key Challenges
- The delay in signature of the Global Fund Round 10 is a major factor in delaying the implementation of the Strategic Plan 2012-2016.
- NMCP has not received a full commitment from partners to fill the LLINs gaps to enable completion of the mass distribution campaign.
- ACT and SP stockouts, and a low uptake of malaria services at the community level due to a lack of policy and personnel to manage services at the community level.
- Insufficient biological confirmation of malaria cases in health facilities and at community level.
- Insufficient collection, analysis and feedback of data.
