Introduction

Malaria transmission in Kenya ranges from intense in lowland areas to unstable epidemic-prone in the highlands. The annual reported number of malaria cases in 2010 was 6,071,583 with 26,017 deaths.

Progress

Kenya has made steady progress in scaling-up malaria control interventions and has, in particular, been successful in attracting resources through the Global Fund including through Round 10. The country has also removed tariffs on all key anti-malarial commodities, banned oral artemisinin-based monotherapies and introduced Community Case Management of malaria. The country is in the process of completing the universal LLIN coverage campaign, planned for completion in 2012. The country has secured adequate financing to sustain coverage of LLINs and ACTs in 2012.

Impact

In 2010, about 6 million suspected malaria cases were reported but only 2,384,402 were confirmed. The number of malaria deaths reported decreased from 48,767 in 2000 to 26,017 in 2010.

Key Challenges

  • Delays in Global Fund and World Bank disbursements is leading to delays in completion of the universal coverage campaign
  • Delays in AMFm implementation and the uncertainty of the future of the AMFm programme.

"By establishing ALMA, we are now creating a critical forum and mechanism for advocacy, action, and follow-up on the implementation of these noble malaria goals."
