Introduction

Malaria is endemic in Ethiopia with differing intensity of transmission, except in the central highlands which are malaria-free. The annual reported number of malaria cases in 2010 was 1,158,197 with 1,581 deaths.

Progress

Ethiopia has made significant progress in scaling up and sustaining universal coverage of key malaria control interventions including parasitological diagnosis, case management and LLINs. Ethiopia has banned oral artemisinin-based monotherapies from the country and has successfully introduced a policy on Community Case Management of malaria and pneumonia.

Impact

The number of malaria cases decreased from an annual average of 3,000,000 during 2000–2005 to 1,160,000 cases in 2010. In the same period the malaria admissions decreased from an average of 48,558 to 30,102 in 2010. Ethiopia is classified as having reduced the burden of malaria between 25-50% since 2000.

Key Challenges

  • With the postponement of the Global Fund Round 11, Ethiopia has mid to long term funding gaps for sustaining universal coverage.
  • The country has documented insecticide resistance to a number of insecticides affecting the IRS program.

"By establishing ALMA, we are now creating a critical forum and mechanism for advocacy, action, and follow-up on the implementation of these noble malaria goals."
