Comoros
Introduction
Most of the population of the Comoros is at high risk of malaria. Transmission is perennial in the Island of Grand Comore and unstable throughout the zones of Anjouan and Mohéli. The annual reported number of malaria cases in 2010 was 47,384 with 53 deaths.
Progress
Comoros has made good progress in scaling-up coverage of key malaria control interventions. The country has secured resources to finance universal coverage of case management in 2012. The country has banned oral artemisinin based monotherapies and has removed tariffs on ACTs and insecticides for IRS. Comoros has also introduced a policy for the community case management of pneumonia and has made significant improvements in coverage of key MNCH interventions, most notably in PMTCT.
Impact
47,384 cases were reported in 2010, of which 77% were parasitologically confirmed. In recent years, there has been an increasing trend in the numbers of malaria cases, probably due to improved reporting. 53 malaria deaths were reported in 2010.
Key Challenges
- Delays in disbursement of Global Fund Round 8 have delayed procurement and distribution of essential commodities
- Cancellation of Global Fund Round 11 will result in funding gaps in future.
- Insufficient human resource and limited number of partners to implement malaria control activities.
