Introduction

In Cape Verde, 58% of the population lives in areas where there is a low risk of malaria; the rest of the country is malaria-free. The annual reported number of malaria cases in 2010 was 47 with 1 death.

Progress

Cape Verde has made great progress and achieved significant impact in its malaria control program, enabling the country to enter the pre-elimination phase of malaria control. The country has increased coverage of key MNCH interventions, in particular DPT3 vaccinations, and skilled birth attendant deliveries.

Impact

As a result of the progress on malaria control, the country has seen great reduction in both morbidity and mortality. Total confirmed malaria cases decreased from 126 during 2000–2001 to 47 cases in 2010. Only one malaria death was reported in 2010. As such the country has achieved the international target of at least a 50 per cent reduction in malaria burden since 2000.

Key Challenges

  • Sustaining malaria control gains as the country prepares for elimination.
  • Inadequate human resources for critical work as the country transitions to the pre-elimination phase of malaria.
  • Tariffs on LLINs still exist.

"By establishing ALMA, we are now creating a critical forum and mechanism for advocacy, action, and follow-up on the implementation of these noble malaria goals."

~ President Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete, United Republic of Tanzania
