Cameroon
Introduction
Malaria transmission occurs year round in Cameroon and is most intense in the south of the country. The annual reported number of malaria cases in 2010 was 1,845,691 with 4,536 deaths.
Progress
Cameroon has banned the import and sale of oral artemisinin-based monotherapies and has removed tariffs on ACTs. Cameroon also introduced Community Case Management of malaria and pneumonia and secured resources under the Global Fund Round 9 to conduct the first large-scale national distribution of LLINs, in the drive to achieve universal coverage. There remains a need for additional LLINs to reach universal coverage.
Impact
The number of reported malaria cases in 2010 was 1,845,691 with 4,536 deaths. The number of reported malaria admissions was 364,865.
Key Challenges
- Delays in completing the reporting on the mass LLIN distribution campaign funded by the Global Fund, has led to significant delays in disbursement.
- Disbursement of State funds for implementation delayed by internal bureaucracy and administrative hurdles.
