Introduction

Malaria is present throughout Burkina Faso, with transmission most intense in the southern part of the country; it is highly seasonal, occurring between December and April. The annual reported number of malaria cases in 2010 was 5,409,156 with 9,024 deaths.

Progress

Burkina Faso has banned the import and sale of oral artemisinin-based monotherapies and has removed tariffs on ACTs, RDTs and LLINs. The country has introduced a policy on Community Case Management of malaria but has yet to introduce a policy on Community Case Management of pneumonia. The country has secured sufficient resources for the procurement of ACT, RDTs and LLINs in 2012. Burkina Faso has achieved the Abuja target of 15% national public sector financing (health as a percentage of total government expenditure).

Impact

The annual reported number of malaria cases in 2010 was 5,409,156 with 9,024 deaths. However, the number of reported cases and deaths has been consistently increasing since 2000, possibly due at least in part to improved reporting completeness.

Key Challenges

  • Lack of financial resources for implementation of program management, effective monitoring and evaluation and implementation of outreach activities.

"By establishing ALMA, we are now creating a critical forum and mechanism for advocacy, action, and follow-up on the implementation of these noble malaria goals."

~ President Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete, United Republic of Tanzania
