Introduction

Malaria is endemic throughout Benin; however, transmission is more intense in the southern third of the country and is highly seasonal, occurring between December and April. The annual reported number of malaria cases in 2010 was 1,432,095 with 964 deaths.

Progress

Benin has banned the importation and sale of oral artemisinin-based monotherapies, as well as removing tariffs on LLINs, ACTs and RDTs. Benin has also introduced Community Case Management of malaria and has taken steps to introduce policy for Community Case Management of pneumonia. The country has achieved universal coverage of LLINs.

Key Challenges

  • Inadequate human resources and technical assistance for the implementation of the plan of scaling up of IPTi
  • Financial constraints caused by unfulfilled pledged donor resources to close gaps and cancellation of the Global Fund Round 11.

"By establishing ALMA, we are now creating a critical forum and mechanism for advocacy, action, and follow-up on the implementation of these noble malaria goals."
