Introduction

The entire population of Angola is at risk of malaria. The annual reported number of suspected malaria cases in 2010 was 2,783,619 with 8,114 deaths.

Progress

Angola has confirmed the removal of tariffs on all anti-malarial commodities and has declared the intention to ban oral artemisinin-based monotherapies from the country. Angola has done well in mobilizing resources for malaria control with Global Fund grants in Rounds 7 and 10. The country has secured the majority of the funds required to achieve high coverage of key malaria control interventions.

Impact

The country reported 2,783,619 malaria cases with 8,114 malaria deaths in 2010. 166,879 malaria admissions were also reported in 2010.

Key Challenges

The country has faced significant delays in moving to the Global Fund Round 7 Phase 2 and signature of the Round 10 grant, slowing scale-up to universal coverage, and leading to decreasing operational coverage of LLINs.

"By establishing ALMA, we are now creating a critical forum and mechanism for advocacy, action, and follow-up on the implementation of these noble malaria goals."
