In 2011, ALMA Heads of State and Government requested the ALMA Secretariat to establish an accountability and transparency framework to track progress, facilitate a rapid response to emerging issues and bottlenecks and allow for the sharing of lessons learned.

In response, the ALMA Scorecard for Accountability and Action was launched in September 2011. It consists of a semi-automated database that tracks progress across key indicators covering malaria policy, financing, intervention coverage, impact, and includes tracer maternal and child health metrics.

National progress against each indicator is tracked regularly and categorized and colour-coded using a traffic-light system as follows:

• Green - target achieved or largely on track
• Yellow - good progress, but more effort required to achieve target
• Red -not on track

All data included in the ALMA Scorecard are collated from internationally recognized sources that are published by key partners including WHO, the World Bank and the Roll Back Malaria secretariat.

The ALMA Scorecard is hosted and updated by the ALMA Secretariat and WHO, in collaboration with Roll Back Malaria partners. The ALMA Scorecard is updated on a monthly basis.

Country reports are generated on a quarterly basis which highlight progress and successes, identify bottlenecks and include key recommended actions to address these bottlenecks. ALMA supports countries to find solutions and tracks actions in response to recommendations.

ALMA Heads of State and Government use the scorecard to review progress at the ALMA forum, held twice a year in partnership with the Africa Union.
